Aviva pension annuity rates depend on your age, health, the annuity type and market conditions, Aviva says; there is no single figure to expect.

Everything below comes from Aviva's own pages and documents as they stood on 18 October 2026, and no rate is printed, because Aviva works one out from your details. Pension Wise from MoneyHelper gives free, impartial, government-backed guidance to people aged 50 or over. To have an FCA-authorised adviser go over your own pot and options, there is no charge for sending the form on this page. This site is independent of Aviva: the form goes to that adviser, not to Aviva, and is not a way to get an Aviva quote.

How an Aviva annuity works

Aviva's pension annuity page says it "works like a wage after you retire": your pot buys "a regular guaranteed income for life". The general mechanics are in what a pension annuity is; what follows is Aviva's own product.

Aviva's key features document and web page both set a £10,000 minimum, the web page counting it as what is left "after withdrawing tax-free cash and paying any adviser fees". It adds: "If your pension is with Aviva though, there's no minimum." The same page says "You can take up to 25% of your pension as tax-free cash before you buy your annuity", which "will mean a lower level of income". Its Immediate Life Annuity, bought with savings, is covered under purchased life annuities.

What sets the rate, and what rates to expect

Aviva's own answer to "what will I get?" starts with the size of the pot: its rates article says "The size of your pension pot determines your annuity income more than anything else." On the rate itself, it says:

What annuity rate can you get? In short, it depends. Annuity rates rely on a few things, like your age and health, the type of annuity you choose and market conditions.

— Aviva, An overview of annuity rates (last updated 13 Nov 2025), accessed 18 October 2026

The key features list what the income depends on: your age, postcode, marital status, whether you smoke, the size of the pot, "interest rates at the time", whether you take a tax-free lump sum, "the adviser you choose" and any choices about the income. The rates article shows a graph of "our average annuity rates" for 65-year-olds at a range of pot sizes, an average rather than an offer, then says "The actual annuity rate we would offer is tailored to your circumstances and choices."

Rates can also move before you buy: "Annuity rates may change after you've submitted your application", the key features say, and Aviva will contact you if the quoted income has reduced. Why rates move is covered in where annuity rates are heading, and what a pot of a given size might buy in how much annuity income you would get.

Health and lifestyle

Aviva's key features say that if you have had cancer, a heart attack, a stroke, diabetes or another serious condition that could shorten life expectancy, "you may qualify for a higher income. Not all forms of these conditions will qualify." Aviva says no medical examination is required, though it may ask for a health questionnaire and a doctor's report. What is known about the size of the uplift is in enhanced annuity rates.

Options that change the income: rising, joint life, guarantees

On the pattern of income, Aviva's page says "You can fix it for life, increase it by a set amount each year, or increase your payments in line with the Retail Price Index", and warns that "Having your income increase either with inflation or by a fixed amount, will mean you start with a lower amount." The trade-off is covered in inflation-linked annuity rates.

For people you want to provide for, Aviva lists a joint life annuity (see the questions below), a guarantee period that keeps payments going to beneficiaries "for a set time (1–30 years)", and value protection of "up to 100%" of the purchase money as a lump sum. These options, its page says, "will mean you'll receive a lower income from the start."

The key features add the conditions. The annuity "has a one year guarantee as standard" and value protection "as standard for 90 days from your plan start date", but "If you choose optional value protection, the standard one year guarantee period will no longer apply." The protected amount is the price paid "less any payments already made". How these features work is in guarantee periods and value protection.

Getting a quote from Aviva, and shopping around

Aviva offers two routes: its online annuity calculator (who can use it is answered below), or a call, in which its annuity expert asks "your age, if you're married, and whether you have any medical conditions", and then works out your guaranteed income; "You can decide if it's the right amount for you."

Aviva itself says to compare. Its key features: "It's important to shop around for the best deal for you. It's possible that you could get a higher income from another provider." Its shopping around guide says "you can buy it from any provider" and that income "could vary considerably from one provider to the next". It adds that "the health and lifestyle conditions taken into account vary from one provider to another", and asks you to check for "any guarantees or any other valuable benefits that could be lost" before moving to another provider (see guaranteed annuity rates). Buying elsewhere is often called the open market option; the costs involved are in annuity fees.

Charges, changing your mind and what to weigh

Aviva's key features say its charges are taken into account "when we work out the price of the income", that "No further charges will be taken from your income", and that the cost of advice is built into the price and shown on your illustration. One charge stands apart: if the terms have to be rewritten because information given was incorrect or incomplete, "then we'll charge you £40 each time."

The key features say "Yes, you have 30 days in which to change your mind, beginning from the date that you receive our confirmation that the plan has started." Cancelling is not a cash refund: "you must buy another product to provide you with an income in retirement either from us or another provider", and an adviser charge already paid won't be refunded. After that, Aviva's page says "Once you've set up your annuity, you can't change, sell, or transfer it."

Aviva also warns that the income "could affect your entitlement to means-tested state benefits". Whether an annuity suits you at all is covered in is an annuity worth it.

Aviva annuity questions people ask

Does Aviva offer a joint life annuity?

Yes. Aviva's page lists a Joint Life Annuity: "We'll keep paying an income to your partner after you die." Its key features add that if income is to continue to a dependant, "the income you receive will take into account their health, as well as your own." See joint life annuities.

Can I use Aviva's annuity calculator if my pension is not with Aviva?

Yes, Aviva says, "but you do have to be a UK resident aged 55 to 74". It also says "our annuity calculator quote is only an estimate and not a guaranteed quote."

Are Aviva's annuity rates the best?

No one can say in general, because each rate depends on the buyer. Aviva's own rates article tells readers to "make sure you shop around, as other providers could pay more."

Where can I read Aviva's annuity key features?

Aviva's pension annuity page links its key features document (AN15036, dated 10/2025) and its shopping around guide (AR01154, dated 09/2026); both are listed in the sources below. The key features call themselves "a summary of your Pension Annuity", and Aviva says it will send the full terms and conditions if you ask.

Your next step

Aviva works out its rate from your details, and its own documents point you to other providers' quotes too. An FCA-authorised adviser can set an Aviva quote beside others and beside your State Pension and savings: ask for a call using the form on this page. Sending it commits you to nothing.
