To withdraw from PensionBee, you log in online from age 55 (57 from 2028); the firm puts the usual wait for a one-off payment at 7-10 working days.

Pension Wise, from MoneyHelper, offers free guidance on your options before you touch the money: "A free Pension Wise appointment explains the options for taking money from your defined contribution pension. It’s impartial and backed by government." See what Pension Wise is. Someone to go through your own pot with you? Ask for a call-back via this page's form; time with an FCA-authorised adviser takes in every pension you hold, at no cost. What follows is PensionBee's own process, in order.

How do you withdraw from PensionBee?

You do it in the PensionBee app or on its website, with no paperwork. PensionBee says withdrawals are made online through pension drawdown with "no forms needed", and that "there are no forms to sign as everything is done digitally". Once you reach the minimum age, "our drawdown option gets activated automatically", with no internal transfer of your existing plan first.

The age is 55, rising to 57 on 6 April 2028. PensionBee sets no maximum age for withdrawing money or using your tax-free cash. More at taking your pension at 55.

Before the money moves, PensionBee asks you to confirm that you are happy to go ahead and have considered taking advice. What stays invested can fall as well as rise, so you may get back less than you put in.

What do you need ready before the first withdrawal?

Two things come first: an identity check and the bank account. For the first, PensionBee says you might be asked to complete a Facial Similarity Check, through a partner called Onfido, and that these requests come at your first withdrawal request. You need a smartphone or tablet with a camera to take a selfie, plus a copy of a passport, a driving licence (full or provisional) or a national identity card. If the check does not pass, your BeeKeeper (the named account manager) reviews the result and invites you to try again, and may ask for certified documents if you still cannot prove your identity online.

For the second, PensionBee pays only into a UK bank account in your own name and at the address held on your PensionBee record, and the bank must be directly regulated by the Prudential Regulation Authority. You can make one taxable cash withdrawal per tax month.

One-off payments or a monthly income from PensionBee?

PensionBee gives two ways to draw on the pot. A one-off withdrawal is taken when you need it. With Automatic withdrawals you choose an amount and a date, and the same sum lands in your bank account each month "without repeated steps". When we read PensionBee's FAQ on 26 October 2026, it listed the Android app and the website for Automatic withdrawals and said iOS would follow.

Either way, a quarter of the pot at most is tax-free, whether taken as a lump sum or in portions, and the rest stays invested. PensionBee says you can take part of that tax-free amount now and part later, and warns about the pension "recycling rules" if you plan to pay into a pension again afterwards. There is no minimum withdrawal and no ad-hoc withdrawal fee, it says. You can draw from any of its plans; for how they differ see which PensionBee plan is best. For the yearly amount, see how much to take from drawdown.

Whether monthly payments suit you turns on what else you live on, something an FCA-authorised adviser sets beside your PensionBee pot on a free call-back once you submit this page's form.

How long does a PensionBee withdrawal take to arrive?

PensionBee's How it works page gives one-off payments a typical 7-10 working days; its FAQ gives the mechanics: a request made before 12pm on a working day is aimed at a trade that same day, and a later request "may be processed the following working day". If there are no problems verifying your bank details, "it should take around 10 working days for you to receive your money". Once the payment has cleared, the withdrawal shows as "Withdrawal" in the Summary tab of your online account, which PensionBee calls the BeeHive. For comparison across providers, see how long a pension cash-in takes.

What tax comes off a PensionBee withdrawal?

Beyond the tax-free quarter, the remaining 75% is subject to Income Tax. It deducts tax through PAYE before paying you. When you take a taxable lump sum, an emergency tax rate applies until HMRC sends your tax code, and PensionBee says payments under an emergency code are treated "as though they're a regular salary or monthly income".

If that happens, PensionBee says you may be able to reclaim the overpaid tax by contacting HMRC and completing a tax claim form; it asks you to keep the payslip it issues for each withdrawal. The same rules sit behind taking the tax-free lump sum.

Can you cash in the whole pot, buy an annuity or start before 55?

Whole pot: it is possible to withdraw in full, but PensionBee says that if the pot has been with it for under a year, a full withdrawal fee of £150 applies, even when the account holds less than £150. Other charges are covered at PensionBee fees.

Lump sums: PensionBee says it does not offer an uncrystallised funds pension lump sum, the small-pot option or more than 25% protected tax-free cash. Compare the routes at flexi-access drawdown and UFPLS.

Annuity: instead of, or alongside, drawdown you can use some or all of the pot to buy an annuity through its partner Legal & General. PensionBee says it earns a referral fee of 1.25% of the money used, and that this "doesn't impact the annuity you'll receive". For the choice between them see annuity or drawdown.

Before 55: PensionBee says its scheme sets the age at the normal minimum pension age and has no protected pension age of its own, but that it honours a protected age of 55 or 56 from a provider you transferred from, where it has been told correctly. Whether yours carries one is a question for the old provider, or for an adviser on a free call-back. More on protected pension ages and the cost of taking money early.

Smaller questions about taking money from PensionBee

Does PensionBee pay into overseas bank accounts?

Only if you hold a UK bank account that meets PensionBee's rules above. Without one, PensionBee says, you cannot withdraw and would have to transfer to another FCA-regulated, UK-based pension scheme to reach the money. See drawdown from outside the UK.

What happens to the rest of my pot after I take some?

It stays invested, and PensionBee's annual management charge does not change when you go into drawdown. Its value can still rise or fall.

Do I need to switch plan to start drawing money?

PensionBee says no: plans are open to every customer whether or not they have started drawdown, and it points out that you are not obliged to choose one of its four Investment Pathways.

Should I get advice before I withdraw?

Advice is a choice, and Pension Wise and MoneyHelper are free to use. Several providers, or doubts over tax? Request a call-back using the quote form; an FCA-authorised adviser phones back to untangle it, free.
