A Phoenix Life pension transfer needs the right form for your plan and a current transfer value, but check first for any guarantee you could give up.
Phoenix Life says many of its plans do not offer flexible access directly, and suggests a move to Standard Life's Active Money Personal Pension, while recommending you shop around. Want yours explained over the phone, free? Our form on this page is the route; an FCA-authorised adviser rings you.
The stages that apply to every provider are in how to transfer a pension. This page covers what is particular to Phoenix Life.
How do you transfer a pension out of Phoenix Life?
Phoenix Life says everything about your current pension is in your retirement pack: "You can find all the information you need about your current Phoenix pension in your retirement pack." Request one online or from its customer services team if you do not have it.
The paperwork depends on the plan. Phoenix Life Limited trades as Phoenix Wealth for some pensions, and its December 2025 transfer request for the Retirement Wealth Account (funds only option) and Personal Pension asks for three things:
- a member transfer request, completed by you;
- a pension scams questionnaire, also completed by you;
- a transfer declaration, completed by the receiving scheme, returned with that scheme's HMRC registration certificate.
That form says it cannot be used for the Section 32, the Executive Pension, any self-invested product or an overseas transfer, so you need a different set for those. Phoenix Wealth gives 0345 129 9993 for the right forms and for an up-to-date transfer value, which you can also get by logging into its Online Services.
Two practical points from the same form. The amount moved "will be recalculated at the date of receipt of our last requirement to transfer the fund", so the figure on your quote can change. And if contributions are being paid by direct debit, Phoenix Wealth says that if it "is not cancelled before the transfer, this could cause a delay in making the transfer payment". If Phoenix Wealth asks HMRC to confirm the receiving scheme is registered, the form says it cannot give a timescale for that. How long the whole move takes is covered in how long a pension transfer takes.
What guarantees should you check before moving a Phoenix Life pension?
Start with any guaranteed annuity rate. Phoenix Life tells you to check what features your plan has before choosing a flexible income, naming guaranteed annuity rates, and its cash-in page says: "These could give you a higher level of income." Weigh what such a rate is worth against the pension you would hold instead; the basics are in what a guaranteed annuity rate is.
Next, ask what a move would cost. Phoenix Life warns that if you "transfer to a new plan, there may be an early exit reduction fee or a market value reduction on your policy, so your pension savings may reduce". How a reduction like that works is in what a market value reduction is, and with-profits policies are weighed in should I transfer my with-profits pension.
Your retirement pack should show which of these apply to your policy. If a guarantee's worth is still unclear, the call-back form here lets an adviser talk it through with you, free.
When must you take advice to transfer from Phoenix Life?
Where a policy has safeguarded benefits, the law adds a step: section 48(1) of the Pension Schemes Act 2015 requires the provider to check that you have taken appropriate independent advice. Under regulation 5 of the 2015 advice regulations, the trustees or managers are not required to carry out that check "if the transfer value of the member’s or survivor’s subsisting rights in respect of safeguarded benefits under the pension scheme is £30,000 or less on the valuation date". Above that, the check applies.
Phoenix Life puts it this way: "if your policy has a safeguarded benefit, and you’re planning to transfer more than £30,000, you’re required to take advice by law." It gives a guaranteed annuity rate as an example of a safeguarded benefit. Who can give that advice is explained in how to find a pension transfer specialist, and final salary pensions covers the other common safeguarded benefit.
What checks will Phoenix Life make on a transfer request?
On its Retirement Wealth Account and Personal Pension form, Phoenix Wealth says it is "legally required to check if signs of a pension scam exist in connection with a proposed transfer", and the scams questionnaire must be returned before your transfer can be processed. If it finds the most severe warning flags, which it calls red flags, "you will lose the right to transfer to your selected receiving scheme". Where lesser warning flags are found, one route the form gives for the transfer to go ahead is that you have taken pension transfer scams guidance from MoneyHelper, a free service.
The FCA gives the same warning from the other side: be "very wary of any scheme offering to help you release cash from your pension before you’re 55", because it is "almost certainly a scam". The FCA adds that 55 is generally the earliest age, except in cases such as poor health, and that it rises to 57 from 2028. More is in the FCA's pension scams guidance and our pension scams page.
The same form has a section for customers aged over 50, asking whether you are transferring to access your money and, if so, whether you have used Pension Wise or had advice. Pension Wise is free government guidance, explained in what Pension Wise is.
Questions on moving a Phoenix Life policy
Is Phoenix Life now Standard Life?
Phoenix Life is now part of Standard Life plc: Phoenix says Phoenix Group became Standard Life plc in March 2026. Your policy may still carry an older name, so check your own papers for the company that holds it. What moving can cost is compared in pension transfer fees.
Did the 2023 policy moves into Phoenix Life Limited change anything?
On 27 October 2023, Phoenix says, policies of Phoenix Life Assurance Limited, Standard Life Assurance Limited and Standard Life Pension Funds Limited transferred to Phoenix Life Limited. Your policy papers name the company, and an adviser can explain whether the 2023 move affects your transfer.
Can I move only part of a Phoenix Life policy?
On the Retirement Wealth Account and Personal Pension form, you either tick to transfer all of the numbered policy or write special instructions; for any other Phoenix plan, ask Phoenix what it allows. The wider picture is in transferring after taking tax-free cash.
Where do I send a Phoenix Wealth transfer form?
For the Retirement Wealth Account and Personal Pension, the form gives Phoenix Wealth, Unit Linked Life & Pensions, PO Box 1393, Peterborough, PE2 2TP, and 0345 129 9993 for questions.
Can I combine a Phoenix Life pension with others?
You can, if each provider allows it, but each old pension needs the same guarantee check. See should I merge pensions, or find a lost pension if you cannot trace one.
