Whether to transfer a UK pension to Australia turns on the type of pension, where you are tax resident and what the fund accepts. The UK rules to weigh.

Should you transfer your UK pension to Australia? No page can answer that for you: it depends on the kind of pension you hold, where you will live and what the Australian fund allows. Your own position can be talked through free of charge: submit the enquiry form below and an FCA-authorised adviser will be in touch.

Can I take my UK pension to Australia?

Moving to Australia does not by itself mean moving the pension; what happens to one you leave in the UK is covered in moving abroad with a UK pension. Shifting the money into an Australian fund is a separate step, an overseas transfer, and the fund has to be a "qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme" (QROPS). GOV.UK puts the job of checking that on you. Where the fund is not a QROPS, the UK scheme can decline to pay, or the transfer is taxed at no less than 40%. The terms are explained in QROPS vs ROPS.

Is there a QROPS in Australia?

Yes: HMRC's notification list is arranged by country, and Australia has its own heading with schemes under it. An entry is a scheme whose managers have notified HMRC that it meets the ROPS conditions and asked to appear. Under the Australia heading HMRC repeats its warning that it "cannot guarantee these are ROPS or that any transfers to them will be free of UK tax", and that checking the tax is your responsibility. Updates appear on the 1st and the 15th, so use the live page. See checking HMRC's list and which countries have QROPS.

The pension age condition

Apart from overseas public service schemes and schemes set up by international organisations, a scheme must also pass what HMRC's manual calls the Pension Age Test HMRC calls it an ongoing test, not a one-off check at transfer. The manual's summary:

In practice this means that, apart from the following named lump sums, a payment may only be made to a member aged under 55 (under age 57 from 6 April 2028) if they are retiring due to ill-health

— HMRC Pensions Tax Manual, PTM112300, accessed 21 October 2026

HMRC applies this to "any benefit payment - both pensions and lump sums", and to every other scheme "regardless of where the scheme is established". If you are unsure what it means for a fund you have in mind, fill in the form and an FCA-authorised adviser can explain it at no cost when they ring.

Will the Australian fund accept it?

QROPS status matters only for UK tax. Whether a transfer can go ahead depends on the receiving scheme being able to accept it under its own country's law, and the Australian Taxation Office says: "Certain conditions must be met before your complying Australian super fund can accept a transfer from your foreign super fund." Ask the fund before you start.

What is the overseas transfer charge on a move to Australia?

HMRC charges income tax at 25% on the value transferred. Its Pensions Tax Manual (PTM102000) says a transfer you ask for from 30 October 2024 onwards is charged unless at least one of four exclusions applies:

  • you are resident in the country where the receiving QROPS is established;
  • the QROPS was set up by an international organisation to pay benefits for past service with it, and you are employed by that organisation (HMRC stresses this does not simply mean a multinational employer);
  • your employer participates in the QROPS, and it is an overseas public service pension scheme;
  • you work for a sponsoring employer of the QROPS, and it is an occupational pension scheme.

Even with an exclusion, any part above your available overseas transfer allowance is charged at 25%. Missing the 60-day deadline for the details form APSS 263 asks for also brings the 25% charge, GOV.UK adds. HMRC reads residence here as residence for tax purposes, which can be hard to pin down part-way through a move; an FCA-authorised adviser can talk through your own timing free if you use the form.

A fifth exclusion, for a QROPS in the European Economic Area or Gibraltar. PTM102200 says it applies only to transfers requested before 30 October 2024 and completed before 30 April 2025, and it never reached a scheme in Australia. The allowance, the five-year rule and reporting duties are on HMRC's QROPS rules.

What does Australia do with a transferred UK pension?

That depends on Australian rules; this site covers the UK side. The Australian Taxation Office's page on transfers from a foreign super fund says a transfer into a complying Australian super fund "is treated as a member contribution", and that the fund "cannot accept a transfer from a foreign fund unless they have your tax file number (TFN), or you give it to them within 30 days of the transfer". The page shows it was last updated on 2 August 2023: check the ATO's current guidance, and take advice in Australia, before you act. On the UK side, GOV.UK warns that some payments from an overseas scheme can still be taxed here, depending on when you were UK resident; see QROPS tax-free lump sums.

Should I transfer my UK pension to Australia? What to weigh

Each of these can cut either way, depending on your plans:

  • Where you live now, and where you will settle. If you live in Australia and the transfer is within your allowance, GOV.UK says no UK tax is due on the transfer. A change of country within five years means form APSS 241: money back if your new home is where the QROPS is based, a 25% charge if you have left that country.
  • The type of pension. For a defined benefit (final salary) pension, the FCA and The Pensions Regulator consider keeping it to be in most members' interests, and there is no reversing a transfer. Where the transfer value of safeguarded benefits is above £30,000, regulations under the Pension Schemes Act 2015 require appropriate independent advice first. See final salary pensions and the advice requirement.
  • Whether you might come back. Moving a QROPS back has its own rules.
  • The alternatives. Leaving the pension in the UK is one; an international SIPP is another.
  • Cost and advice at both ends. See transfer fees; the Australian rules need advice there too.

Your UK scheme can tell you what its own transfer process involves, and a regulated specialist can be found through finding a transfer specialist.

Pension transfer scams and overseas offers

The FCA says pension scams often use attractive offers to persuade people to move a pension pot. One of its warning signs bears directly on an overseas move:

Several groups (some of which may be based overseas) all taking a fee, which means the total amount deducted from your pension is significant.

— FCA, Pension scams, last updated 19 January 2026

Other signs include a promised better return, high-pressure selling and unusual investments; an unexpected free pension review offer is, in its words, likely to be a scam. Check any adviser is authorised by the FCA and never take advice from whoever contacted you. More on pension scams, and the FCA's own pension scams guidance.

Questions about moving a UK pension to Australia

Do I pay tax to transfer a UK pension to Australia?

A 25% UK charge applies unless an exclusion is met, and then only to any excess over your allowance. Australian tax follows Australian rules.

Can a UK private pension be transferred to Australia?

Generally yes, if the Australian fund is a QROPS able to accept it under Australian law; the charge test above applies as for any UK registered scheme. Defined benefit rights also need the advice described above.

Can I get UK pension advice in Australia?

The call-back form leads to a chat with an FCA-authorised adviser, who covers the UK side. Advice on Australian rules comes from someone authorised there.

Does it matter whether I transfer before or after I move?

It can: the residence exclusion depends on your tax residence, and a change of country within five years can bring a refund or a charge. Settle the timing before a request goes in.

Your next step

Whether a transfer suits you rests on facts only you can weigh. For the UK side of an Australian move, type your number into the short form at the foot of this page; the FCA-authorised adviser who phones back charges nothing for that call.
