You can transfer a pension into the NHS Pension Scheme from an HMRC-registered scheme if you apply within 12 months of first becoming eligible to join.

Whatever comes across is added to your NHS benefits, and outside moves from NHS Scotland or Northern Ireland, asking what it would buy commits you to nothing. Timing is the catch: the application must also beat your normal pension age. To have an old pension weighed beside your NHS one, ask for a free call through this page's short form; whoever rings back is an FCA-authorised adviser.

Which pensions can you transfer into the NHS scheme?

The starting point is registration. NHS Pensions' Transfer in guide and application pack says the scheme "may accept a transfer from another pension scheme registered with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC); including a Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (ROPS)".

The guide expects transfers from personal pensions, stakeholder plans, Section 32 buy-outs and money purchase schemes as well as employers' schemes, warning that these may not guarantee their quoted transfer value. If you have just joined, or are thinking of joining, NHS Pensions will confirm whether it can accept a transfer, but it can take the payment itself only once you are an active member. How your own pot would be treated is something an adviser can explain at no cost if you use the form.

Two things are ruled out. After a divorce or dissolved civil partnership, the scheme "cannot accept any transfer payment in respect of pension credits derived from these proceedings" (see pensions on divorce). An overseas pension can come in only from a ROPS (see QROPS and ROPS compared).

Time limits to transfer a pension into the NHS

NHS Pensions' web page sends transfers into the 2015 Scheme, the career average part. You must apply "within 12 months of becoming eligible to join the Scheme for the first time", and before the 2015 Scheme's normal pension age, which is your State Pension age or 65 if that is higher.

There is one exception. Final salary benefits from another public service scheme may be able to go into the 2008 Section, the last open final salary section, provided you are under 65 on the date of the transfer. The guide also keeps limits for existing 1995 and 2008 Section members: 12 months, and before age 60 or 65 respectively; see which NHS pension scheme you are in.

Also from the guide:

  • Pension built up elsewhere during a break from NHS work can come in too, as long as you meet the time limit after the break.
  • The value of the benefits "may be less than quoted in our estimate if it takes more than 12 months from you joining the NHS Pension Scheme to complete the transfer".
  • NHS Pensions takes no responsibility for delays caused by you or the old scheme, and asks for every form to be sent straight away.

Bringing pension from another public service job

Public Sector Transfer Club terms have their own clock. Where the old scheme is in the Club, the guide says "a transfer can only be completed on Club terms if the length of the break between leaving the former scheme and joining the NHS Pension Scheme is no more than five years". Your signed election to proceed "must be received by your former scheme within 12 months of becoming eligible to transfer", and "A request for an estimate is not an election to proceed"; the election is your signed go-ahead after the NHS estimate arrives. Miss a condition and a transfer on non-Club terms may still be possible.

The NHS scheme belongs to the Inner Club but takes transfers from Inner and Outer Club schemes. For a 2015 Scheme member who meets the time limits:

  • Final salary benefits (Inner or Outer Club) buy a membership credit in the 2008 Section on Club terms. With a break of over five years the transfer is on non-Club terms, though you may be able to keep your final salary link.
  • Career average benefits from an Inner Club scheme become a Club transfer earned pension, increased in line with the old scheme's in-service revaluation while you stay an active NHS member.
  • Career average benefits from an Outer Club scheme buy a pensionable earnings credit in the 2015 Scheme on non-Club terms.

On lower NHS pay than in the old scheme, the guide suggests weighing the implications before moving final salary benefits (see what a final salary pension is). Teachers' Pension transfers and civil service transfers in have their own pages.

From enquiry to credit: what NHS Pensions sends you

First tell your employer, payroll or pensions officer, who opens your pension record before you complete the pack. From a scheme other than NHS Scotland or Northern Ireland, "you are not committing yourself to a transfer of pension benefits by making this enquiry". NHS Pensions says it will write within two months of having everything it needs, with an offer of what the transfer would buy, and it returns any payment that reaches it before that estimate has been given.

The estimate comes with an option form. Turn it down and "any subsequent enquiry will be treated as a new request and will be subject to the time limits in the normal way". Into the 1995 or 2008 Section, a transfer buys a membership credit. Into the 2015 Scheme it buys a pensionable earnings credit (non-Club) or a Club earned pension credit, plus a membership credit that is "used towards considering entitlement to certain benefits but not used in the calculation of these benefits". That membership follows calendar time in the old scheme, not the size of the payment, and a payment below the one quoted may buy a smaller credit.

NHS Pensions recommends considering independent advice from an FCA-authorised financial adviser before deciding. Once the estimate arrives, the call-back form here lets you go through its numbers, and the case for leaving things alone, on the phone to an FCA-authorised adviser; the NHS Pensions helpline and Pension Wise are free alternatives.

Moving within the NHS, or from Scotland or Northern Ireland

Everything above is the England and Wales scheme, where moving between NHS employers needs no transfer because the benefits link on their own. NHS Scotland and HSC Northern Ireland run separate schemes, so their pension needs an application. As 'corresponding' schemes they have special arrangements, treating the earlier membership as if worked in England and Wales, but only if you apply within one year of being eligible and the break is five years or less. No estimate is given for these moves: the completed Form A counts as your formal request. Taking an NHS pension out of the scheme is a separate question, answered in can you transfer an NHS pension.

Cold calls and pressure to move a pension quickly

On its pension scams page NHS Pensions tells members: "Do not be rushed or pressured to act". The FCA's warning signs include a guaranteed better return and high-pressure selling; it says to confirm an adviser is FCA-authorised and to refuse advice from whichever company made contact. Suspected scams can be reported through the FCA's pension scams page, and pension transfer rules and red flags has wider checks.

Transferring a pension into the NHS: short answers

Can I transfer my Nest pension into the NHS pension?

NHS Pensions names Nest for one group: members who took their 1995 Section benefits and came back to NHS work. Since 1 April 2023 they may be able to join the 2015 Scheme, and if they end their Nest membership to do so, they may be able to transfer it, within the usual 12-month and normal-pension-age limits. The Nest side is in how to transfer a Nest pension.

Should I transfer a private pension into the NHS scheme?

That turns on what the estimate says the pot would buy, set against what you would give up in the old scheme. NHS Pensions suggests independent FCA-authorised advice before deciding, and whether to combine pensions sets out the general trade-offs.

Is a transfer in the same as an NHS pension transfer value?

No. A transfer in is a payment from an old scheme that buys credit in the NHS scheme; an NHS pension's transfer value is the value of what you hold there.

Where do I find the NHS pension transfer in guide?

It is linked from NHS Pensions' Transferring into the Scheme page; on 21 October 2026 that link was to the file named Transfer Booklet, version V22, April 2024.

What to gather first

Note the date you first became eligible to join, ask your pensions officer for the pack, and get the old scheme's transfer value and any guarantee deadline in writing. Before signing, request a call-back below if an FCA-authorised adviser's view on your own case would help; it costs nothing. Moves between other providers are in how to transfer a pension.
