To check Aegon pension performance, open the factsheet for the fund you hold: each is dated, and Aegon prints its own guide to reading one.
Each Aegon fund has its own record, and the funds you hold depend on your plan. Free, impartial guidance on your choices is available from Pension Wise. An FCA-authorised adviser can consider an Aegon fund and any pensions elsewhere in a single call; this page's quick form asks for one, with nothing to pay. The value of investments can fall as well as rise, and you may get back less than you put in.
Finding the factsheet for your Aegon fund
On its fund prices and performance page, where Aegon asks you to "Select your product to view the latest fund prices, performance data, and up-to-date investment information." The page is divided by range: Aegon Retirement Choices (ARC), One Retirement, Aegon Platform, Aegon Master Trust, TargetPlan, and a group of other ranges that includes Group SIPP, Group Personal Pension, Insured Flexible Pension Plan, stakeholder funds and bonds.
What an Aegon pension is sets out the plans and how to tell them apart. Aegon's investment choices page adds that factsheets and Key Investor Information Documents can be read on your customer dashboard by selecting the fund you are interested in.
What an Aegon fund factsheet shows
Aegon has published a guide to reading its factsheets. It is written for the Aegon/Scottish Equitable insured pension and life fund factsheets; Aegon says factsheets from other fund managers "will use a different format". The parts that matter most for performance are these.
| Item | What Aegon says about it |
|---|---|
| Performance table | How the fund has gone up and down in value over different periods, sometimes shown against its benchmark or sector quartiles. Aegon says the figures are in pounds, bid-to-bid and net of charges with gross income reinvested, and that periods over a year are annualised. |
| Sector quartile | Sorts the performance of funds in the same sector into four sections. In Aegon's example, funds performing in the top 25% sit in quartile one and those in the bottom 25% in quartile four. |
| Crown rating | Issued by FE fundinfo and based on the fund's historical performance against its benchmark, if it has one. |
| Risk rating | Aims to show relative risk on a predefined scale set by Aegon; not an industry standard. TargetPlan factsheets use a different scale. |
The guide's sample factsheets carry results to 31 March 2023, and Aegon says its images are for illustration only. Treat the guide as a key to the layout, not as a source of current results.
How to read the dates, periods and warnings
Every set of results stands at a date. Compare funds only on the same date and over the same period, since tables struck at different dates are not like for like.
Aegon's guidance is that "Investors should always consider performance in relation to the objective of the fund and over periods of at least five years." It adds that if a fund has risen in value, that does not mean it is meeting its objective, and the same applies if it has fallen. Its factsheet wording also says: "Past performance is not a reliable guide to future performance."
In the guide's samples, an ARC fund charge comes on top of any product or adviser charge, while a Pension and Life total charge includes a standard product charge that may differ from yours. Whether a figure on your factsheet already reflects what your own plan charges is best settled from your paperwork, and an adviser can explain it free of charge if you use the form. Charges are covered separately in Aegon pension charges.
Why a lifestyle fund's figures may not be yours
Aegon says lifestyle funds are often used as the default option in workplace pension schemes. Its guide says a factsheet can show information and performance for the growth stage only, and that the figures for a fund in the retirement target stage will be different. On the guide's sample fund that stage normally starts seven years before your selected retirement date; Aegon's lifestyle page says typically six to seven years, though this may vary.
Aegon's lifestyle fund page says that during the retirement target stage "your fund name will change to include your target retirement year". Two colleagues in one scheme may therefore look up different funds, with different results. Aegon suggests logging in to view your fund factsheet and check which retirement option your fund is targeting. How those options differ is in your defined contribution options at retirement.
Fund updates, closures and the Funds Promise
Aegon's fund updates page covers news and changes to its insured funds, "such as fund closures, mergers or changes to fund names or charges". When it was read on 26 October 2026 it listed the closure of the Aegon BlackRock LifePath Retirement Year (BLK) fund in the TargetPlan range, published 1 October 2026 with an effective date of 8 January 2027, so a fund can be renamed or withdrawn after you have looked it up.
Aegon's Funds Promise commits it to monitoring funds "to check if they perform as expected" and taking action "if funds don't meet expectations". It applies to Aegon funds for UK investors, which typically carry names starting with Aegon, WS Aegon or Scottish Equitable.
Which Aegon pension fund is best?
No ranking can be taken from one table of past returns. A sector quartile compares a fund only with others in its own sector, Aegon's risk rating is not comparable with other firms' ratings, and a rise in value is not the same as meeting an objective. What counts as best depends on the fund's aim, your retirement date and how you plan to take the money. Workplace schemes add a further wrinkle, because the default fund can differ by employer: for TargetPlan Aegon names Aegon Lifepath as the standard default, while saying your employer may have chosen a different fund.
Aegon itself recommends seeking advice before changing funds, as your choice of fund can have a significant impact on your pension savings. Weighing up a switch? Your Aegon factsheets, read beside your retirement plans, make a sound agenda for an FCA-authorised adviser to discuss at no cost; to have that adviser ring, complete the form on this page.
Aegon fund factsheets: common queries
How do I find the default fund for my workplace scheme?
Aegon's scheme-specific charges page links a document that lists charges for all default funds in its workplace schemes. TargetPlan members can check their scheme's default by logging in to their TargetPlan account, Aegon says.
Can I compare Aegon's risk rating with another provider's?
Aegon says its rating "is not an industry standard and it has no relevance or relationship to the fund risk ratings of other fund providers". A rating from one firm cannot be read across to another firm's funds.
Does a crown rating mean a fund is good?
A crown rating is based on the fund's historical performance against its benchmark. As with any past result, it says nothing certain about what comes next.
Can past returns tell me what my Aegon pension will pay?
No. Aegon states that past performance is not a reliable guide to future performance, and that you could get back less than you invested. Income from a pension is explained in pension drawdown.
What is the ABI sector on an Aegon factsheet?
It is the Association of British Insurers sector the fund sits in. Aegon says grouping investments this way can make it easier to compare their performance against similar types of fund and investment strategies.
