Are Phoenix Life pensions any good? Its Independent Governance Committee rates value for money well, but many of its plans lack flexible access.
Whether a Phoenix Life pension is any good depends mostly on which plan you hold and what you want from it. On the evidence below, mostly about workplace plans, cost and guarantees come out well; flexibility and speed of service are the weaker points. Phoenix plans vary with the firm they began with, so an FCA-authorised adviser can check yours on a no-charge call-back, which you request in this page's form.
Is a Phoenix Life pension any good on cost, flexibility and service?
Three questions decide it. Are the charges reasonable for what the plan includes? Does the plan let you take money the way you now want to? And does the firm deal with you promptly when you ask?
On charges and investments, Phoenix's own Independent Governance Committee, which assesses value for money for workplace personal pensions, says that overall "customers get value for money from Phoenix". On flexibility, Phoenix itself says many plans are limited. On service, the same committee calls levels "adequate" and says customer satisfaction improved on 2024, with transfer speed and bereavement claims covered later on this page.
Nothing here is a ranking against other providers. If you are comparing, what pension charges look like and how to choose a pension provider set out the wider picture.
Who runs Phoenix Life now?
Phoenix Life describes itself as part of Standard Life plc, the name its parent group took in March 2026. Your pension may also have started elsewhere: Phoenix says that on 27 October 2023 the policies of three companies, including two Standard Life ones, moved into Phoenix Life Limited. One set of rules therefore rarely fits every Phoenix Life plan.
If you cannot recall who your plan started with, tracing a lost pension may help, and moving a plan is covered in Phoenix Life pension transfers.
What Phoenix says its own plans can and cannot do
Phoenix's retirement pages state: "Many Phoenix Life plans don’t directly offer flexible access and you may want to consider transferring to an Active Money Personal Pension with Standard Life." So a plan that is cheap to hold may still not let you take a flexible income or several lump sums. How cashing in works is in Phoenix Life pension withdrawal, and the income route is in Phoenix Life pension drawdown. Pension Wise offers free, impartial guidance before you decide.
Phoenix also flags two features that can make leaving costly. If you take benefits before your retirement date, "there may be an early exit reduction fee or a market value reduction on your current policy, so your pension savings may reduce". And an older plan may carry a guaranteed annuity rate; Phoenix says it "might have a guaranteed annuity rate that’s higher than the market rate when you access your savings", in which case staying put gives a larger income. What these are is explained in guaranteed annuity rates and market value reductions.
Your own plan paperwork shows whether either applies, so confirm it before any move; an adviser can read it alongside you if you ask for a Phoenix-specific ring-back in this page's form.
Legacy charges and guarantees: what the committee found
The committee's 2025 annual report covers workplace personal pension plans from Phoenix Life Assurance Limited or Phoenix Life Limited, with 71,512 members in its charge table. It says charges are a maximum of 0.75% a year where there are no additional guarantees or benefits, and the table puts 65,091 members, 91.0%, in the 0.51% to 0.75% band. Only those with extra benefits such as with-profits guarantees, or who chose external funds with higher charges, pay more than 0.75%.
On leaving charges, the committee records that around 99% of Phoenix plans have no exit charges, with others capped at a maximum of 1% of the plan value. On guarantees, it says a charge for guarantees is currently made only for customers in the NPL With-Profits Fund, set at 0.5% a year, and that many plans there have guaranteed bonus rates of up to 4% a year applying at retirement age, which it calls a valuable feature.
Two limits matter. These are findings on workplace plans, not a charge schedule for an individual personal pension, and although the committee says most of its members are independent, it reviews Phoenix alone, so treat its view as one input beside your statement. Charges on a different type of plan are something an adviser can clarify without cost once you ask for a ring-back through the form.

Phoenix Life service: transfers and bereavement claims
Bereavement claims averaged 133 days in 2025 against a target of 45, though volumes were low and skewed by a few complex cases. Against that, transfers out by the electronic Origo Transfer Service took 10.75 days in the fourth quarter against an industry average of 11.4. Phoenix Life pension reviews, performance and offers
A governance committee's published rating says more about a pension than a star score from strangers. For workplace plans, the committee rated investment performance and services 8 on its 1 to 9 scale, "Excellent". The value of investments can fall as well as rise, and you may get back less than you put in; a rating of the largest funds says nothing about how your own funds will do.
On offers: Phoenix says "we will never call and ask for plan value, policy number, personal or bank information, request your help with research or say we are undertaking a policy review". The FCA adds that if you get a pension call out of the blue, "the safest thing to do is hang up". More is in pension scams.
Phoenix Life pension: common doubts
Does the committee's rating cover my own plan?
The report describes itself as particularly relevant to holders of a workplace personal pension from Phoenix Life Assurance Limited or Phoenix Life Limited. For any other kind of plan, your statement shows what you hold.
Should I leave an old Phoenix Life pension where it is?
It depends on what the plan guarantees against what it lets you do. A guaranteed annuity rate or with-profits guarantee may be worth keeping; limited flexible access may argue for a move. The transfer page lists the checks; an FCA-authorised adviser can weigh guarantees against flexibility for your plan alone, free, when you ask via this page's form.
Where can I see how my Phoenix Life funds have performed?
Your latest statement is the place to start. The committee's "Excellent" rating looks at the largest Phoenix funds, so it cannot tell you how your own funds have done.
