Hargreaves Lansdown annuity rates are quotes for your details, not a fixed price list; HL publishes a weekly table for a £100,000 pension as a guide.
If you searched for annuity rates at Hargreaves Lansdown, you may have an HL SIPP and be wondering what happens when you want a guaranteed income from it. This page sets out what HL’s own pages say about its annuity service, how its published rate table is built, and what to compare it with. It is not a verdict on HL; every HL statement is as the pages read on 19 October 2026.
Free guidance comes first: Pension Wise, MoneyHelper’s government-backed guidance service, costs nothing and is impartial; HL’s own annuity page points to it as well. Would a conversation help? An FCA-authorised adviser firm will phone you once you fill in the free form on this page.
What Hargreaves Lansdown’s annuity service is
HL’s annuity page calls the service a “Trusted annuity broker for over 20 years”, and its buying page describes the job this way: “We shop around for you to find the best annuity rates from the UK’s leading annuity providers”. The annuities themselves are provided by insurance companies. HL’s site states “This website provides information but not personal advice”, with paid financial advice available separately “if you request it”.
On 19 October 2026, HL’s pages worded the range of insurers differently from page to page. The annuity page says you can “Choose from the UK's leading annuity providers on the open market” and its safety answer refers to “our panel providers”; the enhanced annuities page says “shop around the whole UK open market” and offers a quote “from all UK annuity providers on the open market”. None of these pages lists the insurers; a quote-expiry table dated 31 July 2025 names six (Aviva, Canada Life, Just Retirement, Legal & General, Scottish Widows, Standard Life), but is not described as the panel. Ask HL which insurers a quote covers on the day.
HL’s page footer says Hargreaves Lansdown is a trading name of Hargreaves Lansdown Asset Management Limited, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and gives register number 115248 for the Financial Services Register.
How HL’s annuity rate table works
HL’s best rates page explains the table: “we compile the best annuity rates available for a £100,000 pension each week and month.” At the time of reading it was headed “This week's best annuity rates (15 October 2026)”, showing annual income for six ages and several annuity types. It is a guide to what a £100,000 pot can buy, not an offer to you. Three rows from it, for age 65:
| HL’s own table, 15 October 2026, at the time of reading: annual income from £100,000 | Age 65 | Age 65 (smoker) |
|---|---|---|
| Single life, level, no guarantee | £8,211 | £8,755 |
| Joint life 50%, level, no guarantee | £7,658 | £8,055 |
| Single life, RPI, 5 year guarantee | £5,618 | £6,219 |
Those are HL’s figures for that week and will have moved. The basis matters more: the quotes use “an average postcode” and payment “monthly in advance”, and the joint life quotes “assume that the spouse is three years younger than the person buying the annuity”. The smoker column is a 65-year-old who “has smoked 10 cigarettes a day for the last 20 years and drinks 15 units of alcohol a week”. The same page reminds readers that annuity income is taxable.
The rows show what the shape of an annuity costs in starting income. Of increasing income, HL’s options page says “Increases will mean you start with less”, and of joint life, “The higher the proportion, the lower your annual income will be”; see inflation-linked annuity rates and joint life annuities. For what health and lifestyle answers can add, see enhanced annuity rates; without accurate details, “the annuity rate you’re offered might change or be withdrawn”.
What HL charges, and how it is paid
On the annuity service, HL’s buying page says: “There's no fee to set up an annuity using our service. Instead, we’re normally paid a one-off commission directly from your chosen annuity provider. You can see the commission amount in your quote.” The amount is not published on the pages read, so the quote is where to find it.
Whether advice on an annuity can carry commission is covered in annuity fees. HL’s annuity page describes its advice as “paid-for financial advice”, available if you request it. Free annuity advice covers what costs nothing.
The SIPP’s own charges are separate: see Hargreaves Lansdown SIPP fees. Weighing these against your other income is work for a phone conversation with an FCA-authorised adviser. Booking one is free, via the form on this page.
Buying an annuity from a SIPP, at HL or elsewhere
HL’s buying page sets out three steps: get a quote online, call HL’s helpdesk if you are satisfied (the annuity page gives the hours as Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 9:30am to 12:30pm), then return the application, by post in the pre-paid envelope or by email. On that call the team will “check that you're getting the best deal possible, and re-run any quotes for you if they believe you could get a higher secure income”.
HL can confirm how a purchase from its own SIPP works; the general rules are these. GOV.UK says to ask your pension provider which options it offers, as “they may not offer all of them”, and that you can transfer your pot to a different provider; it also says the annuity need not come from your pension provider. HL’s drawdown page mentions that you can “Easily switch to a guaranteed annuity income if your needs change”. See what a SIPP is, annuity or drawdown and, for HL’s drawdown terms, best pension drawdown providers. Other platforms: Fidelity, Vanguard.
On timing, HL’s FAQ says: “On average it currently takes two months, but sometimes can take longer or shorter.” The agreed rate will not change “So long as the annuity provider receives your pension money and all outstanding requirements within the quote expiry period”. If funds arrive late and rates have moved, you receive the new rate the provider offers. And “Once set up an annuity cannot be changed”; after any short cooling-off period the provider offers, you “cannot normally cancel it, change to a different provider or get your money back”.
Any money left in the SIPP rather than spent on the annuity stays invested, and investments can go down in value as well as up, so the amount you end up with could be lower than what went in.
What to compare HL’s quote against
MoneyHelper’s Compare annuities tool (page as archived on 4 August 2026) gives a benchmark, and it says: “We do not receive any incentive or commission for providing this tool.” Putting the same pot, income type and protections into that tool and into HL’s quote tool is one like-for-like check.
Two other checks apply whichever route you use. The same page says to compare providers “including your existing pension provider”, and to check what that provider will offer, “including if they offer guaranteed annuity rates”; guaranteed annuity rates explains why that can matter. And the features you ask each firm to price should match: comparing annuity quotes like for like sets out the list.
On insurer failure, HL says annuities arranged through it and its “panel providers” are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme; what happens if the provider goes bust covers the scheme.
Hargreaves Lansdown annuity questions people ask
What annuity rates does Hargreaves Lansdown offer?
HL does not set one rate: the income depends on the insurer, your pot, age, health and the options chosen. Its weekly table is a guide for a £100,000 pension, and its quote tool gives figures for your details, guaranteed only for a limited time.
Is there a Hargreaves Lansdown annuity calculator?
Yes. HL’s buying page says it takes “a few minutes” and that “It's free to get a quote”. It asks about you and your pension, and HL says to add health and lifestyle details, since they could change the income offered.
Can I buy an annuity with my SIPP?
Buying an annuity is one way to take a defined contribution pension, GOV.UK says, and the provider you buy from can differ from your pension provider. Which options a SIPP provider offers is for it to confirm. Comparing quotes is covered in best annuity rates in the UK.
Your next step
HL’s table shows what a £100,000 pot could buy in a given week, MoneyHelper’s tool shows offers on your own details, and Pension Wise can talk through the options for free. Quotes, tax, health and other income can all be read together on a phone call with an FCA-authorised adviser firm, and the form on this page, with no charge for sending it, is where that request starts.
