To move a pension out of Aegon, contact Aegon and the new provider, which must accept the transfer. Aegon's estimates run from days to up to eight weeks.
The route depends on what you hold: a workplace plan, an Aegon SIPP on the Aegon Platform, or an older personal pension. Want an FCA-authorised adviser to set your pots against what a move might cost? Book a phone call from one at no charge with the form on this page.
Where can an Aegon pension be transferred to?
For a pension on the Aegon Platform, Aegon's guide to transfers says you can transfer the value of your plan "to another registered pension scheme or in certain circumstances to an overseas scheme at any time". GOV.UK tells you to contact both providers, to check the old scheme permits the move and the new one will accept it. Within the UK, a move anywhere other than a registered pension scheme is an unauthorised payment and taxed, GOV.UK says; overseas moves are covered below.
The generic stages, from picking a destination to the paperwork, are in how to transfer a pension. What each Aegon plan is sits in what an Aegon pension is, whether it suits you is in is an Aegon pension any good, and moving money the other way is in transferring a pension into Aegon.
Aegon pension transfer time: days or weeks?
Aegon's estimated times for transfers out share a table with its ISA and GIA processes, so check with Aegon that they apply to your plan. They depend on whether your investments are sold for cash or moved as they are:
| Type of transfer out | Aegon's estimate |
|---|---|
| Cash, enough cash already held | Usually three working days to process, plus three to five working days for the BACS payment to reach the new provider |
| Cash, funds need selling | 13 working days in total |
| Re-registration (in specie) | Up to eight weeks, and much quicker if electronic re-registration is allowed |
Aegon adds that "these estimated times may increase if we need to contact you for further information". In that table a cash transfer may need funds sold first, while a re-registration moves the holding across as it stands. For delays at the receiving end, see how long a pension transfer takes.
Does Aegon charge to transfer a pension out?
For the Aegon SIPP, its key information document says Aegon will not charge to move your funds to another registered scheme or a qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme, "but you might be charged by the other scheme". The same document warns that the manager of your investments may charge for the sale or re-registration of them.
That document covers the Aegon SIPP, not Aegon Retirement Choices, One Retirement or Retiready. Pricing of workplace and older Aegon plans is in Aegon pension charges; an exit cost on your Aegon plan is one to raise, free, when an FCA-authorised adviser phones back about the form on this page. If you hold with-profits funds, Aegon says the payout depends partly on any market value reductions in its TWP and UWP funds, so ask Aegon whether one would apply to your transfer. Read what a market value reduction is and with-profits transfers; fees on any move are in pension transfer fees.
Guarantees and safeguarded benefits: what to check first
Aegon's guide to transfers warns that a pension transfer "may not be the best option for you" because you may lose "features, protections, guarantees or other benefits". GOV.UK lists some concrete losses: a right to take your pension at a certain age, fixed or enhanced protection, or a right to tax-free cash above 25% of the pot. Your providers can tell you which of these apply.
Aegon says with-profits investments "may include guarantees of minimum payouts at certain defined points in time". Defined benefit rights count as safeguarded benefits (in the Pension Schemes Act 2015, anything that is not money purchase or cash balance). Above a £30,000 transfer value, the trustees or managers must carry out the advice check in section 48(1); regulation 5 of SI 2015/742 lifts it at £30,000 or less. The FCA says "The FCA and The Pensions Regulator (TPR) believe it's in most people's best interests to keep their DB pension." See final salary pensions and pension transfer specialists. If any of this could apply to your pot, an adviser can talk it over after you request a call-back.
Partial moves, drawdown and overseas transfers
GOV.UK tells you to check whether your scheme allows you to move "some or all" of the pot, so ask Aegon about a partial transfer for your plan. Money already in drawdown follows other rules, covered in transferring a drawdown pension, and taking tax-free cash first is covered in taking 25% and transferring the rest.
On overseas moves, Aegon's SIPP document says certain transfers to or from a qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme "will be subject to an overseas transfer tax charge unless one of the exemptions specified under legislation applies". Only UK rules are covered here, and the receiving country may have its own tax and pension rules, so you would need advice where you live as well. What a QROPS is, which countries have one and whether a QROPS is a good idea are all on this site.
Scam checks before you sign anything
The FCA says "Pension scams often involve attractive offers that aim to persuade you to transfer your pension pot (or release funds from it)", and its defined benefit page says not to talk to firms that contact you out of the blue about your pension options. Aegon's document library for its Aegon and Scottish Equitable pension and bond plans carries a guide called "How to protect yourself from pension scams". The FCA's pension scams page shows the warning signs.
More on moving money out of Aegon
Can I move my Aegon pension to Nest or Vanguard?
GOV.UK says a UK pot can go to another registered UK pension scheme, so either can be a destination if your Aegon plan allows the move and the new scheme accepts it. Whether it makes sense is covered in moving a pension into Nest and moving a pension into a Vanguard SIPP.
What is re-registration, and are my funds sold?
Re-registration, which Aegon's processing table also calls in specie, moves your investments to the new provider without selling them; a cash transfer sells them and sends the money. In specie transfers explains the choice.
Does a transfer from Aegon trigger tax?
A move to a registered UK scheme is not an unauthorised payment, but the receiving scheme still has to accept it. What tax can apply is set out in tax on a pension transfer.
How do I find my Aegon transfer value?
Ask Aegon, as the provider you are leaving. On its page for people moving pots in, Aegon tells them to "Get a transfer value from your other pension plan providers." Set the figure beside what the new plan charges.
Talking your own Aegon pension through
Where to hold your money depends on your plan, your other pots and what any guarantees are worth to you. Whatever you decide about Aegon, an FCA-authorised adviser can review your set of pots after you request a call-back by form, and that call costs nothing.
