To transfer a pension to a Vanguard SIPP, you apply online and Vanguard requests it from your old provider, taking 10 working days to 10 weeks or more.
Vanguard sells its SIPP as the Vanguard Personal Pension, and once you apply it says there is no need to contact it during the transfer. Some pensions need checking first, though, and a few cannot move at all. Still undecided about moving every pot? This page's short form can arrange time with an FCA-authorised adviser, ahead of any transfer request.
How to start a Vanguard pension transfer, step by step
You do not ask your old provider to start anything; Vanguard does that. Have your provider's name, your policy number, the transfer value and your National Insurance number to hand, then:
- Apply online, giving a few details of the current provider and what the pension holds.
- Vanguard contacts your current provider, which confirms the value and the cash and investments inside.
- The provider processes the transfer. Some need signed paperwork, and if yours does, Vanguard sends a form to print, sign and post.
- Vanguard emails you and sends a secure message when it is done.
Your name and address must match what your old provider holds, as a mismatch can slow things down. Vanguard also asks you to check the policy number, since a statement can show several. A step-by-step version for any provider is in how to transfer a pension, and opening the account itself is in how to open a Vanguard SIPP.
How long does a pension transfer to Vanguard take?
Vanguard says pension transfers can take as little as 10 working days or as long as 10 weeks or more. Its factsheet says it will "aim to complete your transfer within 30 days", though it could take considerably longer depending on your provider and the investments held. Electronic transfers are quicker than paper ones.
If your old provider has stopped paying income before the transfer completes, your income may be interrupted, and Vanguard says you will need to manage your income needs while it is in progress. Delays and what to do about them are in how long a pension transfer takes.
Pensions Vanguard accepts, checks first or turns away
Vanguard's transfer page says that SIPPs are accepted and that other pension types are either accepted subject to a check with your current provider, or not accepted. Its transfer factsheet (May 2025) and key features document (November 2025) add the detail:
- No minimum. There is no minimum transfer value.
- UK schemes only. The key features accept transfers from other UK registered pension schemes, and the factsheet says QROPS are not accepted, including those from Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
- Workplace pensions. A whole workplace pension can only move once you have left the scheme. Vanguard says to wait 3 months after receiving your final contribution, and some schemes allow part of the pot to move while you are still a member.
- Pensions already paying out. Flexible drawdown pensions can come across, but only whole, into the self-managed service. Capped drawdown cannot, and nor can a pension you started taking benefits from before 6 April 2006. Whether yours is capped is covered in moving a drawdown pension.
The Vanguard pension is not a workplace pension, so your employer cannot pay into it. For the wider question of whether a SIPP suits you, see moving a pension into a SIPP.
What to check with your old provider before you move
Vanguard says it charges nothing for transfers, but your existing provider might, so ask about exit fees before you apply. Its list of things to check also includes the current value, whether your details are up to date and whether you would lose any guaranteed benefits. The factsheet names some of those benefits:
- guaranteed income, including from final salary pensions, and guaranteed annuity rates;
- extra death benefits;
- a protected pension age, or tax-free cash above 25% for some who joined before 6 April 2006 (see protected pension age on transfer);
- guaranteed returns or bonuses, where a market value reduction may also apply (see market value reductions).
MoneyHelper reports that the FCA and the Pensions Regulator "believe that most people will benefit more from keeping their defined benefit pension". It also says unfunded public sector pensions, the NHS and Teachers' schemes among them, can move only to another defined benefit scheme, which rules out Vanguard. Other final salary pensions need a cash equivalent transfer value, valid for three months; the factsheet asks you to start at least 30 days before it expires.
Vanguard's key features say safeguarded benefits over £30,000, which include final salary rights and guaranteed annuity rates, are accepted only with positive advice from a qualified adviser, plus its advice declaration. You pay any adviser fee yourself. Finding a transfer specialist is explained separately.

Cash or in specie: how your investments arrive
Holdings usually arrive one of two ways. Vanguard funds held with your old provider that Vanguard also offers can usually be moved across as they are, which is called re-registration or an in specie transfer. Funds from other firms are sold by the old provider and sent as cash, which you then invest in Vanguard's range.
Not every Vanguard holding moves as it stands: the factsheet says some funds offered by other providers cannot be re-registered, and Vanguard ETFs have to be sold if you use the managed service. Cash in transit means being out of the market, so you could miss gains, or avoid losses, while it moves. Investments can fall as well as rise, and you may get back less than you put in. Choosing funds afterwards is in Vanguard SIPP fund options.
Vanguard transfers: cost, cooling-off and scam worries
Does Vanguard charge to transfer a pension in?
No, according to its transfer page, though the old provider might. The running costs afterwards are in Vanguard SIPP fees.
Is there a cooling-off period on a Vanguard pension transfer?
Vanguard's key features allow 30 calendar days from your transfer request to cancel in writing. If the old scheme has already released the money it may refuse it back, guarantees included, so another scheme would have to take it; Vanguard repays the transfer less any fall in value.
Can pension benefits from a divorce settlement move to Vanguard?
The factsheet says Vanguard accepts qualifying benefits from a divorce settlement (pre-retirement ones) but not disqualifying, post-retirement benefits such as drawdown. On combining pots generally, see should I merge pensions.
Can I see how my Vanguard transfer is going?
Logging in to your online account shows the status of your transfers, Vanguard says, and its app shows those in progress, completed or cancelled within the last 6 months. If a transfer is rejected for any reason, it sends a secure message.
What if someone offers to move my pension to Vanguard for me?
The FCA warns that pension scams "often involve attractive offers that aim to persuade you to transfer your pension pot", and its pension scams page (last updated 19 January 2026) sets out the signs.
