Is a Legal & General pension good? Its Personal Pension takes £1 transfers, but drawdown needs the whole pot and tax-free cash can't currently be staged.

With L&G, what counts is which of its plans you hold or are offered, and whether its rules fit how you mean to draw the money. What follows comes from L&G's April 2026 Key Features and its Personal Pension web page, read on 26 October 2026. Should an L&G plan earn a place among your pots? Put your name to the form on this page, and that question is one an FCA-authorised adviser can mull over alongside you during a free call. L&G's charges are on Legal & General pension fees, and fund choice on which Legal & General pension fund.

Which Legal & General pensions can you take out?

There are two routes in, and they work differently. The Personal Pension is one you open for yourself. L&G's April 2026 Key Features call it "a fully online offering suitable for customers aged between 18 and 74", and L&G's web page says you can pay in until 75. Its web page offers three ways to invest: a default investment option, five diversified funds based on risk appetite, or a single fund from a wider range.

A workplace pension is chosen and set up by an employer, not by you; one L&G product of this kind is the WorkSave Pension Plan, which its April 2026 Key Features say your employer sets up for you automatically. How the workplace route runs is on the Legal & General workplace pension. Types and how they fit together are in Legal & General pensions explained, and L&G annuities have their own page, Legal & General annuity rates.

Who the L&G Personal Pension is built for

These conditions come from L&G's Key Features, April 2026, and its web page.

  • Residence. It is "designed specifically for UK residents whose earnings are assessed by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for tax purposes". Others may face eligibility and tax questions, and L&G cannot accept a US person.
  • Starting amount. The initial minimum lump sum is £100 and £1 after that; a transfer can start at £1.
  • Locked until minimum pension age. "Your money must remain in a Pension until at least your NMPA, other than in exceptional circumstances." NMPA, the normal minimum pension age, is currently 55, rising to 57 from 6 April 2028.
  • No employer money. Your employer can't pay in, as L&G says it isn't suitable for automatic enrolment, and it warns that opting out of a workplace scheme to use it could lose you valuable benefits.
  • Some pensions cannot move in. L&G lists "final salary" plans, With Profits plans and those with Guaranteed Annuity Rates or Guaranteed Minimum Benefits as ones it can't consolidate. Moving a pension in can also mean losing guaranteed benefits, which how to transfer a pension goes through.

Drawdown has its own limits. Per the Key Features, your whole pot has to move into drawdown, not part of it, you cannot then make further contributions, and "If you don't take the full 25% when you set up your plan, our product doesn't currently allow you to take the tax-free allowance later." Other providers may allow staged access. Pension drawdown explains the general rules.

If Legal & General failed: what the FSCS would cover

The Personal Pension Key Features name its administrator as Legal & General (Portfolio Management Services) Limited, say it is "authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority", give Financial Services Register number 146786, and invite you to check that at fca.org.uk/register.

Compensation is described differently in the two documents. The Personal Pension document says the firm is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which "is designed to pay customers compensation if they lose money because a firm is unable to pay them what they owe". It adds that your ability to claim "will depend on whether you are a UK resident, the specific circumstances of your claim and how your pension is invested", that shares are not covered, and that unit trusts are, up to £85,000 under current limits. Cash in the plan is held at the Royal Bank of Scotland, which L&G says the FSCS also covers.

The WorkSave Key Features instead explain that funds are held through an insurance policy with Legal and General Assurance Society Limited, and that if it became insolvent, you "may be able to claim for any losses from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), potentially up to 100% of the total value". FSCS's own pensions page says that, where it can pay for a failed provider's plan that counts as a contract of long-term insurance, it pays the full value with no ceiling; it can't protect occupational pension schemes themselves if they fail. Which applies depends on your plan, so check its Key Features.

FSCS cover addresses a failed firm, not falling markets.

What does L&G say about risk, advice and guidance?

L&G says it can give information on how the pension works and on its own products, but it "can't give you financial advice". It points to Pension Wise, a free, impartial government-backed service for people aged 50 or over, covered in what is Pension Wise, and to advisers, who it says usually charge for their services. Whether L&G offers advice elsewhere in the group is on Legal & General pension advice.

L&G's April 2026 Key Features warn that "the value of your pension pot can go down as well as up, so you may get back less than you put in." It says the default option "has been designed to be appropriate for most people in our Personal Pension", but that "this may not align with your personal circumstances or financial goals". It also warns that joining "may not be suitable for you, particularly if these savings could affect your entitlement to any means tested state benefits".

More on Legal & General pensions

Why might my Legal & General pension fall in value?

L&G says its value depends on how much you pay in, how well the fund performs, how much is taken in charges, inflation and when you take your money.

Can I cancel a new L&G Personal Pension?

L&G's Key Features give up to 30 days from the date the pension is opened. You get back the value of the account, which may be less than you paid in if investments have fallen. Once tax-free cash has been paid you can't cancel.

Can I take my L&G workplace pension with me when I change job?

The WorkSave Key Features say you can take the plan with you if you change employer, and that you may be able to transfer in savings from other employers. Whether your own employer's plan allows this is for them to confirm.

What happens to my L&G pension if I die?

You are invited to nominate a beneficiary when you apply. L&G says the options available to them change with legislation and may depend on the pot's value, and that it uses discretion over any lump sum death benefit. Pension death benefits explains the general rules.

Is a Legal & General pension good for your retirement?

The documents show what L&G will accept, what it asks and what protection it describes. They cannot show how this fits next to your State Pension, other pots and tax position. Your own position is what a qualified, FCA-authorised adviser weighs on the free call-back that this page's form sets up. Choosing a pension provider sets out other things to compare. Investments can fall as well as rise.
