The NHS pension in Scotland is its own scheme, administered by the Scottish Public Pensions Agency (SPPA). NHS staff in Wales share the England and Wales scheme.
Is the NHS pension different in Scotland and Wales?
It is different in Scotland but not in Wales. NHS staff in Scotland belong to the NHS Pension Scheme (Scotland), which the Scottish Public Pensions Agency (SPPA) administers. Staff in Wales are in the same scheme as England, run by NHSBSA, whose members' guide is written for "the 2015 NHS Pension Scheme for England and Wales". SPPA's transfer guidance treats England and Wales as one NHS scheme and Northern Ireland as another.
Thinking of an NHS job on the other side of the border? Ask an FCA-authorised adviser about the pension side, at no cost, using this page's short form. The free routes come first: SPPA for your own record and, if you are 50 or over and also have a defined contribution pension, a Pension Wise appointment from MoneyHelper.
Which section you are in turns on when you joined and what protection you had; which NHS pension scheme am I in explains how to tell, and what the NHS pension is covers the basics. This page sticks to what changes when SPPA is your scheme.
The 1995 section, 2008 section and 2015 scheme in Scotland
SPPA says the NHS Scotland Pension Scheme 2015 replaced the earlier schemes on 1 April 2015. Its published key features for each part are below.
| Part of the scheme | Closed to new members | Normal pension age | How the pension builds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1995 section | Closed on 1 April 2008 | 60, with an option to retire at 55 for Special Class members and Mental Health Officers | 1/80th of final year's pensionable pay for each year of membership |
| 2008 section | Closed on 1 April 2015 | 65 | 1/60th of reckonable pay for each year of service |
| 2015 scheme | Open to new NHS employees | The same as your State Pension Age | 1/54th of pensionable earnings each year, on a career average basis |
In the 2015 scheme, benefits for active members are revalued each year by the Consumer Prices Index plus 1.5%. Under the 2008 section, your three highest consecutive years of pay are averaged, picked from the last decade before you retire or leave. Pension ages and early retirement in the England and Wales scheme are in NHS pension age, and taking the NHS pension early covers reductions.
NHS pension contribution rates in Scotland from April 2026
Rates follow pay bands, as they do elsewhere, but the band edges are SPPA's own. Its table, read on 30 October 2026, sets rates from 1 April 2026 by your 2025/26 pensionable earnings: 5.7% up to £13,330, across nine bands to 12.7% at £80,026 and above. For employed staff the band comes from actual pensionable pay in the previous scheme year; GPs, dentists and other practitioners are banded on current-year earnings. If a change of job or pay alters your pensionable pay during 2026/27, SPPA reassesses you on annualised pay against a second table of 2026/27 bands, where 12.7% starts at £83,027.
For the England and Wales tiers, see NHS pension contribution rates. Check your own band on SPPA's page before relying on any figure here.
McCloud remedy in Scotland
SPPA describes the remedy period as the time between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2022. From 1 April 2022 all NHS members were in the 2015 scheme and the older schemes closed to further build-up. Eligible members who retire after 1 April 2022 are entitled to both legacy and reformed scheme benefits. The remedy itself is covered in the NHS pension McCloud remedy. How a remedy choice plays out depends on your Scottish service record. An adviser can walk you through it for nothing; the enquiry form here is how you ask.
How to log in to SPPA and get your NHS pension statement
SPPA's member portal is called Engage. NHS, teachers', police and firefighters' scheme members are told to contact the agency through it, and if you cannot get in, SPPA gives 01896 893000 as the number to call. The older MyPension Online account stays active until 31 March 2027 but gets no new information, so new payslips and P60s go to Engage.
If you are not eligible for the remedy, your annual benefit statement is due by the end of August each year. Members who are eligible get a combined statement that also tracks benefits in the alternative scheme, and you find it on Engage. Your joining date in the Scottish scheme is always the start of your first pensionable job in Scotland, even if service was transferred in from elsewhere.
Moving between the Scottish and England and Wales schemes
Moving employer across the border does not carry your pension over by itself. Transfers between UK schemes "are not automatic", so you send SPPA the transfer-in form, and SPPA says to apply as soon as you join the Scottish scheme if you have rights built up in England and Wales. It adds that NHS to NHS transfers can currently be made up until your normal retirement age, though that arrangement may not always be in place. The England and Wales side has its own steps in transfer a pension into the NHS, and transferring out of the NHS pension deals with the reverse.
The length of any break matters. With continuous NHS service or a gap of under five years, you receive broadly the same benefits, and your former NHS scheme calculates the transfer value and sends it to SPPA. With a gap of five years or more, benefits are calculated on a different basis and you are sent an estimate of what the transfer value would buy. SPPA suggests independent financial advice at that stage. Holding service in two NHS schemes makes the sums harder to check alone, which is where the enquiry form on this page helps: you can arrange to speak, free, with an FCA-authorised adviser. Be wary of anyone who phones offering to move an NHS pension; pension scams explains what to look for.
What Scottish NHS pension members often ask
What is the NHS pension in Scotland called?
SPPA calls it the NHS Pension Scheme (Scotland), made up of the 1995 section, the 2008 section and the 2015 scheme. For other Scottish public services, see the Teachers' Pension in Scotland and the Scottish police pension.
Is there an NHS pension in Wales?
Not one of its own: NHS staff in Wales are in the NHS Pension Scheme for England and Wales, run by NHSBSA. NHS pension rates and NHS pension age apply there.
Can I see my NHS pension statement online in Scotland?
Yes. Statements for eligible members sit on Engage, SPPA's online portal, and its contact page gives a phone number if you cannot register.
Does the Scottish NHS pension cost more or less than England's?
Each scheme publishes its own bands, so compare SPPA's table with NHSBSA's rather than assuming. Whether SPPA's band for your pay suits your plans is a fair question for a free adviser conversation, which the form on this page can start.
Do I pay into the Scottish scheme automatically?
Enrolment is automatic when you start NHS Scotland employment, though membership is not compulsory and you can opt out. Opting out of the NHS pension sets out what that involves.
